Intramedullary Nails for Long-Bone Fracture Fixation

Intramedullary nails provide load-sharing internal fixation of long-bone fractures, inserted into the medullary canal to maintain length, alignment and rotation. Indicated in femoral, tibial and humeral shaft and metaphyseal fractures, they permit early weight-bearing and minimally invasive, closed reduction techniques that preserve the fracture haematoma and periosteal blood supply.

The selection spans reamed and unreamed designs, antegrade and retrograde options and anatomically contoured nails with proximal and distal interlocking screw configurations. Titanium alloy and stainless-steel construction offers fatigue strength and biocompatibility, while cannulation supports guidewire-directed placement under intra-operative fluoroscopy.
